Firefox vs Chrome vs Internet Explorer

Update: Here’s the benchmark I did last night and it is consistent with the general data available.

I was thinking about posting a benchmark for all the three browsers, for the sake of the tradition. But since within hours there are going to be tons of it i figured it’s going to be dead work. I installed the three browsers anyway, just to get the feel of their performance with naked eye. As expected Google’s Chrome justified my expectations. It is lightweight, fast, simple, pretty good for first public beta. Well i found a few bugs myself. It wont scroll up with thouchpad :S which is pretty weird, misses a home button which i use alot, and maybe some javascript issues. Java is not supported yet but i believe that’s going to be fixed in the next versions.

So after using them around my feel was that Internet Explorer 8 will again fall behind the cunning and functional Firefox and even the rookie Chrome. And i was right in general. I stumbled on the lifehacker.com

benchmark, one of the first on the web. They tested with latest beta’s – Firefox 3.1b,

Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 and Chrome 0.2. Turns out that FF has best cold start, lesser memory, Chrome – best hot start, fastest CSS draw IE8 – best javascript engine, weird and slow css draw.

New thing about Chrome is that every tab runs in different process which makes it suitable during a busy session. If some of the tabs crashes the whole browser stays intact and you may prevent some text/work loss :)

Here are the Chrome about:pages.

  1. i too use all the three browsers and incidently i find chrome easy to handle though they have a long way to go inorder to out-do the firefox and the IE.
chrome has way better appearence compared to other.
i am hoping for a completely revolutionarised chrome’s next version

  2. I am using Firefox, opera,Ie And last but not least Chrome I feel My comfort levels as below

Opera – I like it bcoz some easy functions ,not complicated
firefox – Good ,some times it crashes ,little complicated
Ie- Avg, Very slow in processing high usage of memory
Chrome – Very soft and crispy I feel like a icecream very easy to use more flexible – Just looking for more things like ad dons

  3. I have used IE, Firefox, Opera and Chrome
Frankly, I found nothing that great in Chrome – all features of Chrome are identical to IE 8, which also provides a large browsing area. Chrome consumes a lot of power, loads pages at more or less the same time as IE or FF… Perhaps the full power of Chrome will be realised once Google integrates all Google products with Chrome, or when web pages with enormous amounts of JavaScript are available…

  4. Chrome has a good base to work on. It just needs plenty of more “tune-ups” and add-ons, it’ll good to go. I’m still holding back at the moment because it’s still in the early stages. I’m definitely using it once it has more features.

Like you said above if some tabs crashes the whole browser stays intact. That is awesome, unlike my FF; the whole damn thing hangs!

  5. I am using Firefox, Opera, Netscape

Firefox is the mostly I use because the faster browser than IE.
Opera have function like can download torrent. If I don’t have Opera, I must use bittorent, bitcomet and others and have dial page.
Netscape same like firefox that faster browsing but they have stylish in an interface. I like it.

  6. The thing about the tabs running in a different process will be very useful, considering that in FF sometimes the browser gets locked up for 30 seconds waiting on 1 tab that freezes. I do agree that IE will bite the dust here, considering FF always has been better and Chroma seems to be going on the way up through FF’s success.

  7. well, where to start. First Firefox is approximately 1,000,000,000 times BETTER THAN CHROME!!!!!!!
Firefox may use more memory, but that is because you can do so much more with it so much safer. I installed Chrome 2 weeks after it was released, giving google plenty of time fix all of the most common errors with their first release. When i ran it it wouldn’t let me visit a lot of web pages, and then it would crash, again and again. Then when i tried to go back to firefox, all of a sudden firefox starts crashing like crazy. The only thing I can say was good about Chrome is that google made it very easy to uninstall, literally took seconds, which shows how little there was to Chrome in the first place!

Really? So like, if I were to develop a browser and just have some code in there to eat memory for no real good reason, it’s somehow safer than all the other browsers? By that completely idiotic rational, IE is the safest browser.

So what’s my browser of choice? Anything but Firefox. As a web developer, I experience endless frustrations getting Firefox to handle JavaScript manipulations of CSS properly. Every other browser, including (cringe) Safari, handles JavaScript CSS manipulations better than Firefox.

  9. Geez dude your choice is anything but firefox?! And ure web dev?! and ure saying that FF doesnt handle js and css properly?! Wow Oo lmao rofl lol this guy is kickass.

  10. I KNOW EVERYTHING

OK U LITTLE GIRLS AND 40 YEAR OLD GUYS WHO SIT ON THERE ARSE. FIREFOX,EXPLORER,CHROME AND ALL THE OTHER PROGRAMS ARE THE FUCKING SAME U CLICK HERE AND THERE AND U GET A FUCKING WEBPAGE THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT SO STOP BITCHING ABOUT SAFTEY.

AND APPERANCE WISE WHO CARES IF THE PROGRAM IS GREEN OR CHROME OR HAS A FUCKING FOX ON FIRE IT DOESNT MAKE ANY DEFFERENCE.

AND LIEK WAT 60% OF THE PPL WHO USE THE FUCKING INTERENET DONT EVEN KNOW HOW IT WORKS OR HOW MUCH MERORY ITS USING. SO WHO CARES IF IT RUNNING SLOW FUCKING CLOSE A FUCKING TAB IDIOT INSTEAD OF BITCHING AND MOANING ABOUT IT BEING SLOW.

HOPEFULLY U IDIOTS THAT CRY OVER SLOW INTERNET WILL STOP FIGHTING OVER NOTHING AND GET BACK TO WANKING OVER WOW CHARS.

  11. Firefox4lifeIsAnIdiot, you gotta be kidding me. firefox is THE MOST USED browser for a reason, it’s the BEST out there. it handles html and css PERFECTLY compared to IE. it’s fast, it doesn’t use that much memory, but an average amount. It’s got SO many features like addons, themes, and so much stuff! as a programmer, you should be devoted to firefox. My teacher at my community college has been programming for 25 yrs, and he knows that firefox is best.

  12. here are the list:

CHROME: for thoose who have a very slow PC (like me :-) and thoose who love the simple things. why?? because thoose who have an slow PC, they only want to do something fast and usually they only have one thing opened. CHROME, starts very fast and its very simple.

FIREFOX: for thoose who have a fast computer and thoose who are more exigent and have a lots of things open. why?? because thoose who have a fast computer, the computer can do everything fast, and usually firefox starts very slow, and generally, they have like 99999 things opened at once

    IE8: (nothing espcial)

  13. FF is for sure the best. You have COMPLETE cookie control. Chrome is either all or nothing when it comes to cookies which is ridiculous, & IE will let you block or deny only, but unlike FF it has no “session only” cookies. Whne I combine my FF browser with the sleek look of Foxdie, it blows the other browser away. Chrome is fast at 1st, but after you’ve unknowingly accepted every cookie on earth in to it, it will slow down…..a lot.
